Cat in basket - Message from the mayor
Having freshly arrived in Berkeley, California, at the beginning of my studies, I was very pleased to be coaxed along the once famous Telegraph Avenue, the site of so many student protests and riots in the 1960s and 1970s. A city doesn't only serve as a setting of studies, but also as a place to live and to gain experience of life. Particularly for foreigners, it is useful to have clues helping to find the essence of one's new residence. Its pivotal features. The places to be and not to be. The reasons for its - actual and/or historical - fame.
As a mayor, I would be delighted to see foreign students quickly feel at home in my city, like - as the famous Utrecht interior designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld wrote - a cat in a basket. Like I did in Berkeley. If this site contributes to just that, it is - so to speak - self-recommending.
